The Weathermen Release 'Reports Of A Possible Kidnapping'

The Weathermen, consisting of Cage, El-p, Aesop Rock, Breezely Brewin (Jugganots),  Camu Tao (RIP), Tame One and Yak Ballz, release their first official single since 2003 as the second leak off the upcoming Def Jux Presents 4 from seminal underground hip hop label Def Jux.

The group is a merging of artists who continue to push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable in hip hop in both the mainstream and in the genre itself. Within their own careers, The Weathermen are all accomplished musicians and successful independent artists known for their fierce dedication to the craft and fearless innovation of style and sound, as a collective they are simply a monster.

Over a decade out since it's formation the group has undergone some personnel change and with the loss of Camu Tao the project has taken on a new meaning to both the artists and fans alike. Camu was a touchstone in the lives of many of The Weathermen, a great friend, and an inexplicably talented MC/ producer, his passing has galvanized the crew. With new resolve and purpose The Weathermen have officially taken to the studio to finally justify its cult-like following. Featured on DJXp4, 'Reports of A Possible Kidnapping' is the first song from their long threatened collaborative album 'THE NEW LEFT' (being recorded now). 'Reports Of A Possible Kidnapping', features indie rap giants Aesop Rock, El-p, and Cage (with an intro by the late great Camu Tao) and is produced by Aesop Rock and El-p.

When is this album coming out? You should finish this shit and go on a 50 show tour across the US with Mr. Lif. Film it for a DVD to go with the album later on. We need a new Can Ox album also.

AWE yeeeEAH!

Cage is still the shit.

No you missed the mark when

Posted on Wed, 08/05/2009 - 13:11 by: Kristen (not verified)

No you missed the mark when you said that the marketing genius at Def Jux changed Cage to bring in 15 year old boys. They knew what to do and how to do it, they got Cage to sober up and lose weight. They took him shopping for new clothes and let his hair grow out for one purpose only- bringing in girls. They are crafty little bastards aren’t they?! The last piece of the puzzle was to get Cage to write a song about a stalker who says all the things a girl wants to hear right before he kills her. We girls love a stalker love song.

It really was a great plan and it seems to be working. Because the difference in bringing in 15 year old boys and grown women is that women will fall for a guy and then want to know everything about him which means that we will go back and find all of his old stuff and buy it. We will want to know about his friends which means that we will find Aesop, El-P and Camu and buy their stuff too. To El the obvious puppet master- that was genius.

So it is not that he wanted to clean up his life and explore new things artistically. It isn’t even that he thought that Movies was good enough to stand on its own without repeating it over and over again. Yep it was all about marketing.

To all of the straight guys complaining about his clothes and his hair- stop being such a chick. I love all of the guys talking about his new look and somehow that makes Cage gay. Suddenly all of the old fans have become Queer Eye for the rap guy.

Either enjoy the new stuff or move on to someone more willing to cater to you. From where I am sitting you got what you wanted from him and he doesn’t owe you anything. You sound like the old ex who got dumped for the new girl- me.

Hahaha.

I'm pretty sure El-P and Cage don't care that some fag wrote a novel about their new marketing strategy on definitivejux.net.

Pretty sick quote.

“There’s a disconcerted boy with an opinion and an arsenal of hearsay on any given corner of the world these days begging for you to fail so that they can redeem themselves somehow.”

Lol.

Switching styles like a high school girl is growing up?

Posted on Thu, 07/30/2009 - 22:59 by: Anonymous (not verified)

I can't ever remember an MC changing his style so much like Cage. Who else has done so? It reminds me of a high school girl trying to get in with a new crowd which makes sense because that is obviously what Cage is doing.

And Cage's Album of the year? Did you even listen to that song 'Fat kids need an anthem'? Fucking garbage I tell you.

Weathermen are coming!

Depart From Me is the album of the year niggas.

Weather whatever man

Posted on Tue, 07/28/2009 - 13:24 by: Anonymous (not verified)

This track is dope. Probably recorded before Cage's Depart from Hip Hop album and his new Oasis look. It's cute that he is trying on new outfits and now crossing his legs when he sits. I love watching this guy. Just shows he was fake all along and now he is waving it in everyones face like he is saying 'thanks for the money and support but I was Gay all along and everything I said was fake you suckers!' I am just waiting to hear about him and Shia Lebouf being lovers. Would it really surprise anyone?

gotta love the all caps

Posted on Wed, 07/29/2009 - 23:52 by: Anonymous (not verified)

gotta love the all caps writing...it really translates the love and support you have for cage. you are such a fan. look, i could care less about the "'gangsta' look", as you so eloquently put it. my biggest complaint about depart from me is the fact that he hardly raps. period. and when he does rap, there are zero humorous pop culture references and fancy wordplay. leave out the drug gimmicks if you must, leave out the murder gimmick, fine...but to completely abandon sentence structure and humor all together? that kind of sucks. like i have said three times now, if cage wants to sing/scream/hardly rap about depression, anxiety, and how much life sucks, then i think its smart. he will gain a whole new following from a younger audience who are into metal music and are studying to get their drivers permit. chances are they wont download the album because they can spend their parents money instead cutting ten out of a paycheck. i do not knock the hustle one bit. again, the only beef was that the art of rapping is absent on his record. however, at least original fans (however many of them who still check for his shit) get to hear him spit on this weathermen track. lastly, there is no maturity in choosing to wear skin tight jeans; its just one fashion trend to the next. maturity has nothing to with clothes.

to the linkin park, jay-z comment...

Posted on Mon, 07/27/2009 - 18:43 by: Anonymous (not verified)

yeah, i made a linkin park comparison, which i still stand by, but its primarily in relation to marketing purposes; to attract that hardcore 15 year old rebelling against the society that attempts to conform him/her. i have listened to the cage record plenty of times, and like i previously said, i applaud the marketing strategy to target the younger goth kid/hot topic shoppers. from his personal life to the song content, he is a perfect iconic fit to fill that artist void for that demographic. cage shows used to be 18 and up, now they are 15 or 16? something like that? see what i mean? but back to the music... the only song that remotely sounds anything similar in delivery, syllable structure, flow, etc to this new weathermen track (or at least cage's verse) is nothing left to say. the rest of the record, he isnt juggling wordplay and rhyming with a monstrous, complex delivery like how he used to rhyme. hell, half the time he is singing. now, i am not saying "old cage is better" or any of that nonsense, but its obvious the primary element absent from depart from me, is the really sharp rhyming ability that attracted some of his core audience. I am certain a percentage of album sales, or downloads, or fans in general, probably are just now getting into cage, so they wouldn't remember the punchlines and pcp references. "granted, i got a cannon and my freakin mouths leakin cause my crew put more dust in the air than housekeeping" yes, obviously drug references are not in this album, and thats not what i am addressing; i am trying to point out the fact that the sentence structure, delivery, and references are also gone in DFM...but at least they show up in the new weathermen track. bottom line, DFM will give cage more exposure because he is doing something different and expanding his target audience to fans who might not own illmatic, but rather a linkin park cd. congrats. lastly, to end with a jay-z quote that is more suitable to this conversation..."dumb down for my audience to double my dollars, they criticize me for it, yet they all yell holla!"....except replace "holla!" with "i was a fat guuuuuyyyyyyyy"

Sounds good

Posted on Mon, 07/27/2009 - 14:22 by: Anonymous (not verified)

Sounds good. Glad to hear this after the disapointing Cage album.

Lol.

Only someone who hasn't listen to the new Cage record would make a Linkin Park comparison. "Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?" Jay-Z

What an excellent sounding track. This is indeed the real shit. I hope the new album follows suit, cant wait to hear it. WM!

very pleased...

Posted on Fri, 07/24/2009 - 14:26 by: Anonymous (not verified)

this track was a pleasant surprise. the beat hits hard, aesop destroys it in his practically confusing as chinese math delivery (love the "car! honk honk...game on!" shit). el further destroys it with what i consider one his best verses since the first track on weareallgoingtoburninhell2 "breathe exhaust cloud mmmm favorite." but the best part about this was that cage shows he can still rap. that depart from me/linkin park sound is fine...i applaud the marketing strategy to target the new wave of goth/hot topic kids with this latest project, but i tend to drift more towards actual heavy rap; the sort of thing that made me a fan in the first place. its important to diversify your bonds, but its also important to throw a bone to the original fans, while still proving you have it. if any of the tracks featured off camu's king of hearts album will be on djp4, then that and this kidnapping song should make this compilation pretty solid....aside from that gas galazy track from yak ballz. what happened there? damn...

Yup...
