Dizzee Rascal, the UK grime rapper has crossed the pond and is in the states for a spring ‘08 tour. He’s hooked up with Def Jux which has released his album, Maths+English here in the great USofA. I had a chance to sit down with Dizzee and kick it. I’m sure there was no way that I’d be as interesting as whatever happens in the back of a tour-bus, but I tried my best!
Shabooty: Hi Dizzee, Who’s your favorite soccer team?
Dizzee: West ham, ’cause I’m from East London
Do you rock the jerseys too?

The Paladium
Somewhere directly under a highway overpass next to a soup kitchen there sits a new venue you’d expect to find in a bit more metropolitan city. My first trip to The Paladium was not disappointing. It was a Latin disco last time I checked. Now it’s a live music venue with a great summer hip-hop line-up on the books. The occasion for my departure from my recent hermit-like existence was to catch my inaugural show from Del Tha Funky Homosapien (of Hieroglyphics, Gorillaz and Deltron renown.)

If you’ve been to any of the previous Wakarusa Music and Camping Festivals, this year’s won’t be much different from the others, said Brett Mosiman, the festival’s founder. There’s one exception: The campground will be a little less populated, and you can blame $4-a-gallon-gas for most of that.
“Not a lot is new,” Mosiman said. “We’ve rearranged some tents and the placements of stages, but in general the layout will look familiar to everyone. We have five stages, about 125 bands, around 300 hours of music and the music goes on until 4 a.m.

Brooklyn based Chin Chin are the first non-hip hop signings to Def Jux and it seems that the guy on the right might have access to a time machine, that’s taking retro to a whole new level. Label boss EL-P has described them as ‘like the worlds greatest wedding band on acid’ and their self titled album is full of wigged out horny psychedelic jazz disco. Here’s a remix by DJ Eli Escobar that popped up recently on the internets.
mp3: chin chin - toot d’amore (dj eli remix).

Analog Giant pointed me towards a group called Chin Chin!, the newest group from Definitive Jux. This label has brought you some of the best hip hop in the last few years, artists like Aesop Rock, Murs, RJD2, Mr. Lif and many, many more. Apparently even Del the Funky Homosapien has joined their ranks.
And yet Chin Chin is very, very far from hip hop. They describe their music as a combination of funk and disco house.

This Is Modern jazz and funk in a fuzz-tastic way. i haven’t heard anything like this groovy since the 70’s (and I didn’t exist then). Even after drawing heavy influences from the older time period, the band does not sound retro but more pop. when people speak of fushion, they should be citing Chin Chin as their exhibit A.
Their cultural and genre mixture is rich in sound and really full of flavor. Chin Chin has an influence from everywhere and every-when. “Miami” takes some Latin horns with a 70’s R&B sound. Rating: B-
