ONE FOR THE BICYCLISTS with BAJE ONE from JUNK SCIENCE

</sup>
This picture doesn’t really have anything to do with this post, but I always liked it. Me and Snafu in some nameless hotel room in god-knows-where, getting ready to go do a show after what was surely a bleary-eyed early evening nap AKA the worst kind of sleep.

Anywho... first off, shout out to anyone who rides a bicycle every day. I’m really, truly, sincerely upset that I lost the original clipping that I tore out from last Saturday’s New York Post. Fortunately, these fuckers were stupid enough to post the same article online.

The following text comes from an opinion piece by Kyle Smith in which he talks about the many types of dangerous bicyclists who roam New York City’s streets in search of their ‘next victim’. This one is the best of those / the most racist thing I’ve seen in a while:

“Szechuan Psychos. Working for tips and of questionable immigration status, they serve in the mechanized infantry of General Tso's army. Rusted rides and dumpling physiques generally prevent these wonton warriors from building up much speed - but they prowl residential neighborhoods at night. You'll never see the one that gets you. Nor will you be able to sue him for all he's worth, unless you don't mind being paid in moo shu pork.”

If you don’t believe me that this was actually printed in an actual newspaper, you can see the whole piece here...

(I found the piece by googling ‘wonton warriors’)

Kyle Smith is a shithead for writing this. I’m not even gonna comment on the racism here...that should speak for itself...except to say that for some reason it’s apparently all good to make fun of Asian people. How the fuck do these people get away with this shit? In a fucking newspaper...

But about the attack on cyclists.... sure there are some crazy bikers out there (my homegirl was hit by a biker a while back and got pretty messed up), but any real New Yorker knows that they aren’t any more dangerous than the thousands of crazy drivers out there on the road. In fact, the opposite is true. Since 2005, there have been 80 known fatalities of cyclists who were struck by cars in NYC (source: ghostbikes.org)

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not like all bike riders are angels. A lot of people ride bikes in the same intimidating, this-is-my-street type of style that makes so many motorists so dangerous. Fuck those bike riders and while we’re at it, fuck all those tour-de-Brooklyn guys who ride through Prospect as if the park were their own personal racetrack. It’s also true that a lot of delivery dudes have a weird habit of riding against traffic for some reason but for real, those are just a tiny minority of folks in the grand scheme of biker things. Most people on bikes are just using their preferred method of getting from point A to B. When we’re out there in the zoo with all the cars, WE’RE usually the ones who are seriously vulnerable.

As someone who rides a bike and also drives around NY every day, I know firsthand that on both sides of the coin it’s a cutthroat, dog-eat-dog culture. To get by you have to cut corners, run a light here and there, cut people off... in short, even for the most defensive of drivers / cyclists, you do what you have to do and you try your best to not get killed / not kill anybody.

The asshole who wrote this piece probably lives in Staten Island anyway.

Long live bicycles and those who ride them! (Except for the tour-de-Brooklyn dudes, you gets no love)

Have a great day everybody!

IT’S COOL TO BE A FAN OF STUFF with BAJE ONE from JUNK SCIENCE

First off, I’m a big fan of L&B Spumoni Gardens in Bensonhurst. Go there and try to eat just one slice and one spumoni. Never happen.

My boy D’Arcy Deerok aka Dr. Shenanigans forwarded me this video the other day. If you’re a fan of MF DOOM, Mos Def, or just a fan of hip hop in general, take a second to watch this video, please. I think there’s something in this clip that is sorely lacking in hip hop today.

Mos Def is the man for this. For being secure enough in his own skin to really geek the fuck out over another rapper’s lyrics. It’s one thing to be a rapper in 2009 and shout out Big Daddy Kane or Rakim, but it’s a whole lot cooler (I think) to sincerely show love and respect for your contemporaries. (I guess DOOM is technically a bit older than Mos Def,but still... you know what I mean.) And plus, sitting around with your boys and quoting rap lyrics... that’s some shit I can really relate to.

So that being said, I’m a big fan of DOOM and Mos Def. And in the spirit of the week, I also own original vinyl copies of Funcrusher Plus and the prequel Funcrusher EP (double, clear, minty-aqua vinyl – whatchu know about that?). I’m also a huge fan of Arrested Development, Mr. Show,

Star Wars (the originals and some of the video games),Tina Fey, Bioshock,

and Junot Diaz.

In 2009 it may be true that everybody is just too fucking cool to be a fan of anything anymore. In fact, if we’re not careful, coolness could be the death of us all. Which is why that video of Mos Def is so refreshing. Look at how happy he is, just geeking out over rap lyrics. I love it.

Anyway, just thought I’d share that. Until next time, don’t take no shit from nobody, and be good when you can.

Junk Science Interview with ArtNouveau Mag!!

The duo met in high school in Brooklyn in the mid-nineties. Baje One
stole a handful of mixtapes from Snafu’s backpack, and they formed a
friendship that would make Batman and Robin jealous as they created
lots of music on the weekends.

“Before I really knew Snafu I heard some of his beats literally out
in the playground at school,” Baje One says. “He was making tapes at
home, he had homemade beats and would scratch on them. He was already
making music with friends, I was new to it.”

“I think we became friends when [he] came over and made songs,” Snafu says of their friendship as he eats away at peanut butter.

The guys are like Ying and Yang. Their chemistry is so in-synch they
finish each others sentences and chime in to answer questions for each
other. This chemistry spills over into their music. Baje One’s lyrical
precession and cadence and swagger is near immaculate while Snafu’s
beats weave seamlessly around Baje One’s lyrics to create a uniform
sound that easily feels like it comes from one person.

“It’s all from the vintage 90’s producers that you hear a little
static on the record,” Snafu says of the inspiration for his
production.”"

“One of the coolest things about it is we never know where [a
sample] is from,” Baje One adds.

“Especially with chopping stuff up and
making it unrecognizable.”

Junk Science - Fire Drill from 2dopeboyz.com on Vimeo.

“This is recession art. We made this video for zero dollars without ever stepping foot outside of our apartment” says Baje One, emcee for Brooklyn hip hop group JUNK SCIENCE (Embedded Music / Definitive Jux / Nuclear Family).

“It only looks good because it was shot and directed and edited by Andrew Gura who is the motherfucking man who makes videos for Nas and Snoop and other famous people but who also happens to be a down-to-earth cool dude who just loves to do videos.”

“We first met Dr. Gura in 2005 when Scion hired him to make our video for ‘Roads’. At the time we knew nothing about him, and vice versa, but he tried really hard to make something that would be special and personal to us, and in the end he delivered a final product that went way beyond our expectations. He really captured what that song was about, and we’ve kept in touch ever since. So when he called me to say he was coming to town a few months ago, I was like ‘Hey do you wanna shoot something?’ and he was like ‘Totally.’”

“He came over to me and Snaf’s apartment one day in February. We had no money, no concepts, no nothing. But Andrew just started walking around the house, looking at all the weird stuff we had lying around, pointing out how interesting our place was, kind of thinking out loud, and I could tell the gears were turning. I showed him the camera we had, and he was unimpressed. He asked me if I had heard about these new digital stills cameras that shoot HD video. Fucking weird coincidence... my brother Vito had just bought the exact same camera he was asking about.”

“That was kind of the catalyst, the ‘this was meant to be’ moment. He grabbed the camera and we just started shooting stuff. Real off-the-cuff like ‘ok now change into that shirt and lets do a take of you rapping in the shower’. We shot the video over the course of three short days, and my brother leant a hand on day three, stepping in as the DP.”

“I think for all of us, it was some real back to basics shit, really stripped down, and personal. No money, no crew, no stress. It was like when we were kids and we used to just make stupid videos for fun. And I really think that joy comes across in the look of the video.”

The song “Fire Drill” is out now on a Def Jux itunes exclusive compilation called TIME TRAVEL. “Fire Drill” also constitutes the second of two early previews of Junk Science’s upcoming album “A Miraculous Kind Of Machine” due out later this year. You can get both tracks for FREE at www.radiobelly.com.
I GET YOUR POINT with BAJE ONE from JUNK SCIENCE

Ok.

So apparently everyone who visits this site thinks Lil Wayne is wack... I can live with that.

But I think some of yall might need a quick refresh as to the real definition of wack:

Which is only to say that Lil Wayne is at least a real rapper, and to boot - a helluva lot more interesting than almost every other rapper on “the radio.” I just though it might help put some of this anti-Wayne sentiment into some context... shout out to my boy Justin Monroe for the forward...

And for all the reasons to hate on the man... please don’t do it because he’s famous. Ask your favorite “underground” rapper who their favorite rappers are and I bet they name some famous people...
RANDOM RACIAL PREDICTIONS with BAJE ONE from JUNK SCIENCE

This one’s gonna be a quickie. Just a brief thought that I had earlier today.

Ok, so for all you rap fans, in case you didn’t get the rap memo, apparently Lil Wayne is going to make a rock album.

I’m not here to make any comments about the musical aspects of that situation... Although I am tempted to say, only since Blockhead went off on Wayne on this very site not too long ago, that I do like some of his music. Please don’t front that that “A Milli” shit wasn’t hot, cause it was. And at the very least, if you’re stuck listening to commercial rap radio, which I often am, when a Wayne song comes on you’re guaranteed to at least hear some crazy drugged-out shit. Ok, editorial notes on Weezie are now finished.

Here’s what I really came here to say today... as Wayne ramps up to drop this rock record, I predict that MAD AMOUNTS of folks, most ESPECIALLY white folks, will be saying things along the lines of... “Weird. That’s so weird that he’s making a rock record.” And, even worse: (sounding in my mind) “He should stick to rapping.”

That’s it, that’s my whole prediction. I hope it wasn’t a let down. But think about it this way: Wouldn’t that be a fucked up thing for people to think / say, considering the origins of rock music? And further... isn’t it weird that in 2009 so many people think of rock as white people music?

Anyway, that’s it. I just wanted to go on record now, so when it goes down I can be like “I called it.”

Until next time, don’t take no shit from nobody, and be good when you can,
